In 1854 Victorian England four friends are privately celebrating the wedding of one of their friends.  During this gathering they come up with a rather insignificant wager of who would be the last man standing in evading the parson’s mousetrap.  Of the four, Gideon Pearsall, Viscount Warton, was the most cynical having been married briefly years ago to a heartless conniving witch who used him solely for the purpose of making her fiancé jealous.

Lady Judith Chester is a wealthy, beautiful widow who hardly admits even to herself the real reason for wanting to never remarry. As such Judith enjoys her freedom and has had some very discreet ‘adventures’ with select and equally discreet men.  She’s a little bit wicked but never crossed the line of disregarding respectability.  Both protagonists are ripe for an adventure of their own, but neither was ready for the Le coup de foudre, or bolt of lightning that forged an unmistakable bond between the two that no amount of boundaries, rules, or conditions would dictate how their affair would progress.

Alexander delivers this new series with her trademark gift of sparkling, witty and highly intelligent rapier sharp dialogs that will amuse and entertain with an abundance of double entendres that I found immensely amusing.  Unfortunately, while Alexander is a master of entertaining well-written dialog the lack of action and adventure other than some very spicy and highly innovative physical intimacies did not grab hold of this readers attention.  There were some issues with Gideon’s returning ex-wife that could have, in my opinion, been developed into more of an angst laden problem with the romance, as well as with the Judith’s problematic sister-in-law. Both issues had great potential of  being more fully developed but instead were brushed lightly away.  This was a pleasant read, certainly well written, but lacked the excitement that could have made it a stellar and exhilarating romantic adventure read.
