If readers are looking for a beautifully written story full of passion and love, set against the brilliant backdrop of the medieval Scottish highlands, then A Restless Knight by Deborah MacGillivray is bound to be a winner. Glen Shane has been protected for centuries by a magical mist that guarded passageways into this mystical land. When this protection fails Tamlyn MacShane’s kenning abilities show her the conquering of her homeland by a mysterious Black Dragon, life changes irrevocably. She and her two sisters have claimed ownership of their homes through their clan’s ancient Pict blood but now they find themselves challenged… by the bloody Normans no less! Lord Julian Challon, known as the Black Dragon, is a warrior in Edward Longshanks’ army who has grown weary of the death and destruction that follow in the King’s wake. All he wants is a peaceful land to set down roots, find a good woman to breed him healthy sons, and try to forget the horrors he’s experienced, most recently in the town of Berwick. Lady Tamlyn swears she will never surrender to the hated Englishman, but upon meeting Julian, she finds herself in a struggle between her heart and her will. She kens the vulnerability Julian keeps deeply hidden and finds herself longing to ease his mental anguish. Julian knows he should see the lovely vision as no more than a prisoner, but he cannot help but be drawn to her strength and loyalty to her people. However, they have many hurdles to overcome before they can find peace, and even love with one another. A Restless Knight is an emotional powerhouse of a novel that will have readers running the gamut of emotions from fear to anger, joy to heartache all experienced in the breathtaking majesty of medieval Scotland. Deborah MacGillivray transports readers to a time long past where mystical beliefs were commonplace and Scotland fought to be free from the oppression of the English king. All too often in romance novels, the conflict between hero and heroine comes across as contrived or weak. This is most definitely NOT the case in this novel. The tension between Tamlyn and Julian is very real as we feel their individual fears and desires. Everything in these two players’ minds goes against the bond growing between them yet they are inexorably drawn together as their more tender emotions begin to take over. Experiencing the internal struggles of Tamlyn and Julian puts readers in to a frame of mind where they can’t help but feel the love growing, and the magic brewing between them. We will be sitting right beside them, encouraging the relationship to grow and laughing through our tears when they finally come together and find their much deserved happy ending. Deborah MacGillivray already shows the talent found in a bestselling author with A Restless Knight and I for one will be extremely eager to see where this rising star goes in the romance world. For if she’s this good already, just imagine how incredible she can become! © Kelley A. Hartsell, July 2006. All rights reserved.
