Kaitlyn O’Rourke is apartment sitting for a friend while she decides what to do about her marriage to her husband Dylan. While laid up after breaking her foot, a neighbor across the street has begun calling, revealing frightening pieces of information on the phone. These conversations have turned quite chilling and Kaitlyn has to decide if she can handle it alone or should turn to her estranged husband for help. But how do you get help when no one believes you?

It’s amazing to me how much plot Amanda Stevens can squeeze into a short story like Bedroom Window. Of course anyone who knows anything about Alfred Hitchcock cannot miss the parallels to his work in this story, even going so far as to see a nod given to him in one scene. Stevens knows how to chill you all the way down to the bone with her writing technique. The mysterious neighbor is frightening in his psychotic intensity. What makes the story all the more terrifying is that with no physical proof, no one will believe Kaitlyn about what she knows.

The relationship between Kaitlyn and Dylan is damaged through neglect and the pressures of their feuding families, the Gallaghers (Kaitlyn’s family) and the O’Roarkes. However their marriage is revitalized through her stay at her friend’s home and when they finally begin to share their troubled thoughts. Watching them overcome their differences to find a new strength just when it is most needed adds extra depth to the story.

When limited on time, Bedroom Window is a short story that is definitely not limited on intensity and guaranteed to entertain.
