Lucian Langdon is known as the “Devil Earl”. A scoundrel and accused murderer who grew up in the dirty streets of London, he was rescued from prison when the former Earl of Claybourne declared Lucian his long lost grandson. But only Lucian knows of his deception towards the old gent. It is a shame from which he cannot escape and that, combined with his bad reputation makes him persona non grata amongst the rest of the aristocracy. Lady Catherine Mabry knows she risks more than her own reputation by appearing at the Devil Earl’s door late one evening. But to protect those she loves, she’ll do anything—even if it means striking a very unique bargain with Lucian, one that will put their very lives in jeopardy and have them re-evaluating the deepest yearnings of their heart. Honestly, just when I think Lorraine Heath couldn’t possibly write a better book, she surprises me with something like IN BED WITH THE DEVIL. I admit to being slightly disappointed when I learned that this release was the start of a new series. I had really been looking forward to the remaining books to the Rogues and Roses series and didn’t like the fact that I’d be left hanging. But, from the opening line of IN BED WITH THE DEVIL—“They say my parents were murdered in the London streets by a gang of ruffians.”—I was absolutely, unequivocally hooked. You see, Lucian, along with Jack Dodger, is known as one of the Scoundrels of St. James, a group of boys that lived on the streets. Led by Feagan, they perfected the art of petty theft and pickpocketing as a way of life. And yes, in case you missed it, there is a huge, brilliant, Oliver Twist parallel staring you in the face. With a truly unique and refreshing perspective, Ms. Heath takes the famous tale of Oliver Twist and gives readers a story that shows what happens when boys who had to steal to survive grow up to be men unable to fit in with the high society around them. I love tortured books, and the moment Catherine asks Lucian to do something so dark for her in order to protect someone she loves, IN BED WITH THE DEVIL becomes anything but a fluffy, feel good, historical romance. This book is full of angst and emotion, and I loved every single minute of it.
So, Ms. Heath, you’ve
got completely enthralled with this new series and I cannot wait for Jack’s
book (BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND DESIRE, December 2008). Readers, don’t miss out!
Sprint to the bookstore and grab this book. You won’t regret it. Highly
recommended! Reviewed by Cindy |
