Saige Hamilton has her sights set on a seemingly unattainable man – one who exists only in her own fantasies. She has never met him before, and in fact she has conjured him solely in her own imagination. Imagine her utter shock when he appears in time to escort her to her ten year high school reunion. Saige never knew that some of her ancestors were wizards and wizardesses, until she subconsciously conjures her dream lover out of pure need. But how long can a relationship with a dream man last? Saige Hamilton’s novella, Conjuration has an interesting premise, and the authors’ writing style is natural. While I was appreciative of the imaginative plot, I felt there was not enough discovery time given to the origin of the main character’s, Saige, mysterious powers. Indeed, her own reaction to them when she discovers them is trivial at best, as if it is a non-issue. As the manifestation of Saige’s power was such an important part of the plot, I felt more attention should have been given to it. Instead, the casual mention of her magic seems almost an afterthought, a device to provide the heroine with a fantasy man made real. I did enjoy the story, but was disappointed at the lack of exploration for what I felt was a most important plot point. This novella felt more like a scene than a complete story to me.Reviewed by Jennifer
