Mariah Sayers was brutalized and raped at 17. She ran from her hometown of Plains Point, Missouri when she realized she was pregnant from the event. Sixteen years later, she and her daughter are returning to Plains Point to get her late father’s home ready to sell. Her reoccurring nightmares and flashbacks add to a general sense of unease, but it is only when her best friend is similarly brutalized that she fully realizes that the evil man who attacked her all those years ago is still in the town, and still victimizing women, and that she may still be his ultimate target.

Broken Pieces is a delightful roller-coaster ride that combines the tender romance of Mariah Sayers and local veterinarian, Jack, with the nail-biting suspense of a madman on the loose. Cassidy uses short glimpses into the points of view of other characters in the story to build suspense and to develop a feeling of horror over the twisted workings of the attacker’s mind. She keeps us guessing until the very end over who Mariah’s attacker is, and, while the madman’s climatic final actions seem somewhat out of character, readers should nevertheless find the ending satisfying with all loose ends neatly tied up. If you like contemporary romantic suspense, Broken Pieces would be a good addition to your summer reading list.
