U.S. Air Force Sergeant Christine Canady (CC) is all alone on her twenty-fifth birthday and on a capricious whim, she calls upon Gaea, Great Mother of the Earth and Goddess of Magic, asking for magic in her life. On her military flight to Saudi Arabia for a ninety day deployment, her aircraft crashes into the ocean. Instead of drowning when the plane wreckage pulls her underwater, she encounters Undine, Goddess of the Sea, who changes places with her. Before she can blink, a lecherous merman, her Mother Gaea, a handsome merman, Dylan, a knight of ancient old all drive home the message that she isn’t in the world she knows anymore. It will take all the wisdom and internal feminine power she possesses to deal with the challenges ahead. I was not initially drawn to the mermaid concept of this book, and, in fact, read it simply because I am so impressed with P.C. Cast’s House of Night series. I am SO glad I did! Goddess of the Sea was a magical book with a gentle, ethereal tone that weaves itself around the reader, transporting her to a fascinating world beyond the one we know today. I loved the way Cast created the mermaid’s body, with soft patterned skin instead of true fishlike scales, giving CC an alluring, graceful image that was delightful to consider. The cast of characters and the way that CC touched those she came into contact with added to the rich experience. Being an animal lover, I was particularly enchanted by the friendly dolphins who came to CC’s aid. I only wish we could all have such loyal, loving, joyful animals at our side. I highly recommend Goddess of the Sea to anyone who wants to escape life’s daily pressures and just float on a lovely dream for a while. While a stand alone novel, I nevertheless can’t wait to read the other books in the Goddess Summoning Series. Reviewed by Crystal |
