Harry Dresden is called in as a police consultant to investigate the violent death of a security guard at the Zoo. Political pressures (the deceased was a nephew of a judge) are pushing Detective Murphy to declare the death a gorilla mauling, which will mean the certain death of the Zoo gorilla who keepers say would never harm anyone. Harry races against time to unravel the supernatural “signature” of the true killer, to bring them to justice and save the innocent gorilla. Jim Butcher’s first foray into the world of graphic novels is a typical, action-packed adventure for Harry Dresden. While it is being marketed as a prequel to Butcher’s popular Dresden Files series, only the most loyal of fans would recognize the timing of the novel in regard to the rest of the series. It can certainly be read as a stand alone story, and I found it more similar in style and content to the Dresden short stories that Butcher publishes in various anthologies than a full novel. While I am not an avid fan of the graphic novel genre, the illustrations were well done and I found it interesting to see the artist’s vision of some of the paranormal creatures that Harry encounters. Harry Dresden remains one of my favorite heroes; my automatic expectation is that if it is a Harry Dresden story, then it’s just GOT to be good! And I am happy to report that this story delivers.
