Anica Revere owns a downtown coffee shop named Wicked Brew. She is immediately attracted to Jasper Danes when he drops by, and he appears to be equally smitten by her. During one of their dates, an argument turns ugly when, in a red haze of anger, Anica impulsively uses an ancient spell and turns Jasper into a black cat. A major infraction of the witch’s code, Anica is stripped of her magical powers until she can right the wrong of her impulsive actions. Vicki Lewis Thompson remains on the top of her game with Blonde with a Wand. The characters are appealing, the hijinks hilarious and the pacing swift. While I was prepared to hate Jasper from almost the first scene, his confusion, cleverness, and unintentional kindnesses endeared him to me despite myself. Fans who miss the characters from Thompson’s Hex Series will be pleased to know that Anica also gets a visit from Ambrose and Dorcas, everyone’s favorite witchy couple from Big Knob, Indiana. This book must surely have one of the all-time, most attention-grabbing first lines of any book ever: “The night Anica Revere turned Jasper Danes into a cat started out innocently enough.” I was ready to roll on the floor from this one line alone, and the pacing and humor just never let up from there. What a delight! We also get to meet Anica’s sister, Lily in this novel. Lily is the star of the next Babes on Brooms novel which came out just this March. Stay tuned for my review on Chicks with a Charm next month! If you like the old TV show Bewitched you will be equally charmed and entertained by Blonde with a Wand.
