MaryJanice Davidson provides readers with three new stories, one from each of her popular series. DEAD OVER HEELS kicks off with Undead and Unwed: A Honeymoon Story. Betsy and Sinclair finally are on their honeymoon but things aren’t going as planned. Not only do they have unexpected guests, but a vampire is killing children. Will Betsy and Sinclair uncover who the culprit is? Undead and Unwed: A Honeymoon Story is the long-awaited event that readers have been waiting for… the honeymoon! In typical MaryJanice Davidson style, the honeymoon has its fair share of twists and turns with plenty of humor to keep the tone lighthearted. I would suggest reading UNDEAD AND UNEASY before reading this story as there are revelations in that book that directly apply to what occurs in Undead and Unwed: A Honeymoon Story. Survivors features Reanesta, one of the Undersea Folk or mermaids. She swims to the rescue of Con Conlinson, a television star who finds himself hopelessly adrift at sea. Can love work between a human and a mermaid? Survivors is my favorite story in DEAD OVER HEELS. Anyone who has watched the television shows Man Vs. Wild or Survivorman will instantly recognize the elements that MaryJanice Davidson has spoofed. What a hoot this story was! I couldn’t stop laughing at the interactions between Con and Reanesta. A note in the book indicates that Survivors takes place after SWIMMING WITHOUT A NET but it is easily read as a stand alone. Speed Dating, Werewolf Style Or, Ow, I think You Broke the Bone shows Cain desperately trying to find a mate for herself before she turns 30. After all, the other Pack members she grew up with are all married! She asks her best friend, Saul, to find her a date. See what chaos ensues…. Speed Dating, Werewolf Style Or, Ow, I think You Broke the Bone is perhaps my least favorite story in the anthology although it isn’t necessarily a bad story. Rather, the other two stories are just that much stronger in plot. The storyline itself is fairly predictable. MaryJanice Davidson’s over-the-top humor is perhaps a bit excessive in this one as it wasn’t nearly as amusing as the other two. DEAD OVER HEELS is overall a solid anthology. I have been disappointed by some of the short stories offered up by MaryJanice Davidson in the past but DEAD OVER HEELS is entertaining. The heroines are each very distinctive and the stories vary quite a bit while still remaining true to the humor one expects from Ms. Davidson. DEAD OVER HEELS is sheer fun!Reviewed by Debbie |
