Corine Solomon is proprietor of a small shop in Mexico when her past comes literally knocking at her door. Chance, her former manager and lover, needs her help. His mother has disappeared, leaving behind only her purse and a pocket Buddha she constantly carries with her. Corine knows she can’t refuse to help, and so she turns her gift of psychometry towards the statue. The path ahead will be dangerous as they’ll have to battle dark forces to stand any hope of survival. Can Corine and Chance find Yi Min-chin before it’s too late? Ann Aguirre adds a breath of fresh air to the urban fantasy genre with BLUE DIABLO. The wickedly clever plot is fascinating as she does a spectacular job at world building. It’s easy to envision the mystical forces at work in BLUE DIABLO as the events and setting fit the overall context of the world. Various gifts and powers are on display throughout the story but these powers bring with them a high cost. I particularly like how Ann Aguirre shows the darker side of the powers Chance and Corine both possess. While the world building in BLUE DIABLO is spectacular, it is the characters who make this tale truly stand out. Corine is perhaps one of the most intriguing urban fantasy heroines to have come along in quite awhile. Her down-to-earth attitude is at odds with her ability to sense images from handling objects. In fact, it is her attitude that makes the tale work as her character adds just the right touch of believability to BLUE DIABLO. From her style of dress to sense of humor, Corine Solomon is one heroine I’m glad we haven’t seen the last of! And as for Chance… all I can say is he is one of the most aptly named heroes I’ve ever read about. I can’t wait to see what is in store for Chance and Corine in the future! BLUE DIABLO is one heck of a wild ride! Urban fantasy readers will delight in this clever and innovative tale. Ann Aguirre showcases her phenomenal writing skills in BLUE DIABLO as this is a story that is not to be missed. Highly recommended! Reviewed by Debbie |
