Cal Harper’s life changed dramatically when he was only nine years old. Nineteen years later he’s helping the homeless when he stumbles across his father… and a mystery dating back to the book of Genesis when the first murder weapon was used. Soon Cal and his father, Lloyd, are on a quest that has them searching out the origins of Superman and its creator, Jerry Siegel. How will it all tie together? Brad Meltzer digs into the family mythos to craft a tale that is ultimately about fathers and sons. Cal’s fractured relationship with Lloyd has permeated his entire life, just as Siegel’s loss of his father transformed his. Seeing Superman through Cal’s eyes gives me a whole new appreciation for the mystique behind the bulletproof superhero. One unusual note… I found myself oddly drawn to the villain. I wanted to know more about Ellis and his story. His love for his dog, Benoni, somehow humanizes him despite his rather comic book caricature. Cain, Superman, and a modern day mystery are all wrapped together in this enthralling tale. Brad Meltzer weaves together such seemingly unrelated pieces of information in such an intriguing way that it’s easy to overlook the over-the-top aspects of the storyline. Including the drawings of the various symbols adds to the sense that one is unraveling a great mystery. THE BOOK OF LIES is just sheer fun! Reviewed by Debbie |
