The world has changed… and Dr. Elliott Drake and his four friends are trying to adapt. Society has descended into chaos during the 50 years he and his companions “slept”. Mankind is no longer the dominant species as creatures called gangas stalk the night, killing almost everyone they encounter. However, one woman, Jade, is willing to take on the gangas and survive, and her courage captures Elliott’s attention. Unfortunately, Elliott is distracted by his newly acquired power to heal and is left wondering just how much it will cost him.

Joss Ware introduces readers to a dark and sometimes disturbing world in BEYOND THE NIGHT. The flashbacks to the apocalyptic events in Lou Waxnicki’s journal offer tantalizing tidbits to the mysterious destruction of civilization as we know it. It was hard not to peek ahead to see what else the journal would tell us about the chaotic aftermath. Joss Ware does a marvelous job at gradually revealing the parameters of her world rather than dumping it all at once on the reader.

BEYOND THE NIGHT is one of those books you just don’t want to end. The more I read, the more fascinated I was by the entire concept. The Strangers, the Runners, even the mystery behind the city of Envy… each element adds another dimension to this strange and sometimes brutal world. Readers should note that BEYOND THE NIGHT is part of a trilogy and not every question is answered in this first installment. Thankfully, the second book is already available!

Joss Ware keeps a kernel of hope alive even in the midst of such horrific destruction and it is this very sense of humanity that made BEYOND THE NIGHT so enjoyable. It’s impossible not to cheer for this band of survivors as they forge ahead in a new, often scary world. Highly recommended!
