The year is 2032 and a serial killer is stalking Las Vegas…. Haunted by a recent tragedy, Detective Payce Halligan is unhappy to be saddled with a new partner. Gavin McAllister has demons of his own but is determined to adapt to Las Vegas. Can they work together to stop the madman leaving a string of crucifixion deaths in his wake? P.I. Barrington crafts a very realistic and somewhat frightening futuristic world. The descriptions of the barren desert add an aura of danger to the storyline, making the crucifixions seem somehow even more horrifying. Payce and Gavin have to work within the confines of a world where dehydration is a part of everyday life. The technology she creates is fascinating and enhances without overwhelming the story. P.I. Barrington does a marvelous job at making the environment of her brutal world work for her. Character development is critical to the success of CRUCIFYING ANGEL. Payce and Gavin are both emotionally scarred and hurting. The romance brewing between them is not the focus of the storyline but instead humanizes the characters and adds a needed sense of realism. CRUCIFYING ANGEL is a fantastic beginning to the Future Imperfect series. The only note of caution I have for readers is that it ends on a monstrous cliffhanger- one that makes me want the next book right now! If you like all of your threads tied up in one book, be forewarned that this is not going to happen. CRUCIFYING ANGEL is meant to be part of a series and as such there are numerous pieces of the puzzle still left to be solved. Easily recommended! Reviewed by Debbie |
