An asteroid strikes the moon and now life will never be the same here on Earth….

Miranda Evans is a typical teenager. She’s concerned with her friendships, finding a date to the prom, and keeping her grades up. The advent of the asteroid hitting the moon has led to a slew of homework assignments focusing on the moon when Miranda would rather be online, finding out what is going on with her favorite figure skater, Brandon Erlich. The night the moon is hit changes everything and now Miranda and her family will have to focus solely on survival. LIFE AS WE KNEW IT has changed forever.

LIFE AS WE KNEW IT is one of those powerful tales that haunts the reader long after the last page is turned. The premise seems relatively simple- yet another disaster tale of apocalyptic proportions. However, the voice of Miranda makes LIFE AS WE KNEW IT seem startling realistic. Susan Beth Pfeffer does a marvelous job at capturing the mixture of innocence and maturity of a teenager and putting it into journal entries to chronicle the devastation of the world. Through these journal entries, Miranda’s struggle for survival becomes our own.

LIFE AS WE KNEW IT is a phenomenal “what if” tale about a worldwide disaster. While directed at a young adult audience, the storyline is mesmerizing enough that adults can appreciate it as well. The typical teenage angst is toned down as Miranda faces circumstances that force her to appreciate what she has. LIFE AS WE KNEW IT does offer a rather unflattering view of certain politicians and religious figures, but none so distracting as to ruin the story for any particular viewpoint. Highly recommended!
