*Please note that this is the fifth book in the series and contains spoilers for previous books.* A power struggle is splitting the Territorial Council into two divisions, one supporting Faythe Sanders’ father and the other supporting Calvin Malone. With the death of Ethan, war seems imminent between the two factions of the werecats. Unfortunately, a new wrinkle emerges with the appearance of the thunderbirds. Meanwhile, Faythe finds herself caught in a precarious position with both Jace and Marc vying for her affection. The safety and security of Faythe’s entire Pride is at stake in SHIFT. SHIFT picks up right where PREY left off. Because of the complexity of both the relationships and the political maneuverings within Rachel Vincent’s world, this is a series that should be read in order. Each book builds upon the last as the tension ramps up yet another notch in this phenomenal entry into the series. Rachel Vincent has solidly placed herself among the best urban fantasy writers. Each book just gets better and better as the world and the characters are not static. Ms. Vincent isn’t afraid to challenge her characters, as they face issues that can cause deep divisions and emotional pain. She also isn’t afraid to kill or injure (sometimes in ways that might make the reader wince just a bit) characters to whom we are attached. While this can be gut-wrenching, it also adds an air of believability to the storyline and certainly keeps the readers on their toes! Faythe is an intriguing character. She is caught between the strength that could make her a leader one day and her role as a tabby. Her mistakes are heartfelt ones as she is not malicious or stupid but instead is well intentioned. It’s hard not to like her even when she does something as frustrating as the situation involving Jace and Marc. SHIFT is yet another stellar read from an author who is a must read for any urban fantasy fan. The world of the werecats is not always an easy one but it’s definitely not a dull one either! If you haven’t sampled one of Rachel Vincent’s books, stop what you are doing right now and read STRAY- you’ll be as hooked as I am on this series. Highly recommended! Reviewed by Debbie |
