Survival has been the only focus for Miranda Evans and her family. Ever since an asteroid crashed into the moon, life on earth has changed. From the lack of electricity, to the chaotic weather and loss of sunlight, to the desperate need for food, each day is a struggle. Miranda wonders what happened to her father and his wife and is thrilled when they arrive back to her home. Unfortunately, the worst is not yet over, as Miranda, her family, and their new friends will have to face even more horrors in THIS WORLD WE LIVE IN. THIS WORLD WE LIVE IN is the third book in a trilogy. Miranda and her family are featured in the first book, LIFE AS WE KNEW IT, while Alex and his sister are in the second book, THE DEAD AND GONE. While it is not necessary to read the two prior books, I would recommend it as readers will have a better understanding of who the characters are and what challenges they have faced in this new and desolate world. This becomes particularly important with the startling twists by Susan Beth Pfeffer in this latest tale. THIS WORLD WE LIVE IN is an apocalyptic tale and one that will challenge readers to look deep within themselves. Some of the choices made by the characters may seem extreme, even a bit over the top, and yet they are perfectly understandable in the context of the world. The Last Survivors series has been one that has haunted me every step of the way and I suspect it will also have a huge impact on young adult readers as well. Susan Beth Pfeffer captures the sense of loss and desperation in a way that is so realistic it leaves one just a bit frightened at the possible implications. Not since reading THE GIRL WHO OWNED A CITY by O.T. Nelson has a book so captivated and haunted me so thoroughly. Susan Beth Pfeffer creates a mesmerizing trilogy with The Last Survivors series. Told through the journal entries of the teenaged Miranda, THIS WORLD WE LIVE IN captures the essence of being a teenager in the midst of an unthinkably horrific tragedy. THIS WORLD WE LIVE IN would make for an excellent discussion in a book club, even for adults, as it touches on emotions and fears we all have. Highly recommended! Reviewed by Debbie |
