Dragon Kin females only go into season once every hundred years. A female’s Breeding Time lasts thirty days and is the most dangerous time in her life, but never more so than it is for Maya Ayida. As the Primul Leader of the Born of the Earth Dragon Clan, males will kill not only to mate her, but to seize her title and power for themselves through the mating. It is for this reason that Maya is in hiding, waiting out her Breeding Time in seclusion, hoping fervently to escape males intent on claiming her. She didn’t reckon on Eric Dogori, Second to the Primul Leader of the Born for Water Dragon Clan finding her – again. He nearly destroyed her during her last Breeding Time, a century ago. And now he has found her again, he won’t allow her to refuse him the claim he staked all those years ago. I will admit it – I definitely have a thing for dragons, especially shape shifting dragons! I can never resist a good story involving them, and I can tell you unequivocally that Emma Petersen’s Shifters: Dragon’s Mate definitely falls under the heading of ‘good story’! As leader of her Dragon Clan, Maya is a woman with great power and tremendous responsibilities. Her power and position are craved by many – some of whom will stop at nothing to usurp that power for themselves. Showing weakness in her position is lethal, but being a woman guarantees an Achille’s Heel once a century as her body asserts its needs to procreate over all else. Although a fantasy/paranormal being, Maya is still a woman that the rest of us can readily understand – especially women working in the corporate world, fighting the infamous ‘glass ceiling’. She is strong, independent and self-sufficient, yet under all of that she is still a woman with the needs Mother Nature bred into us to love and procreate. With her emotions heightened during the Breeding Time, we can feel her anguish at the perceived betrayal a century earlier by her lover Eric Dogori, and her fear as he resurfaces, intent on claiming her again. Of course, as with any good romance, everything is not as it seems, and Eric wants nothing more than to prove his innocence to Maya once and for all and convince her of his love and devotion. But first they must wade through festering betrayals and secrets long buried... Shifters: Dragon’s Mate is part of the Dragon Kin series, and I will be awaiting new releases for this series with great anticipation! Reviewed by Jennifer
