Lily is one of the best Holiday Fairies there is, which is why she has been assigned the very important task of teaching one special mortal man how to love again. Unfortunately, Lily isn’t too thrilled with the assignment. She’d much rather be a Children’s Fairy, bringing joy and delight to the little ones. The adult mortals are confusing, more unpredictable, and utterly exhausting. Still, she is determined to perform her duty to the best of her abilities – a task made all the more difficult by the confounding feelings her subject stirs in her… Dr. Timothy Killian has lost everyone he ever loved. Although a good and caring man, he keeps himself distant from others, helping without ever getting too close, without forming any real attachments. But when he knocks the beautiful and cryptic Lily off her feet literally, he isn’t prepared for her to do the same to him – metaphorically! Tim has never met anyone remotely like Lily, and his defenses don’t stand a chance… Fairies & Wishes by Karen Erickson is an absolutely delightful romantic tale! Although billed as a Christmas story, it can be enjoyed any time of the year, as far as I am concerned. Erickson spins a whimsical story of love and wishes come true that could not be more magical if she had sprinkled it with Fairy Dust! Casting the heroine, Lily, as a Fairy sets the stage for many humorous moments as the naïve Lily knows just enough about mortal love, sex, and relationships to be charmingly confused. Of course, it is just this element that holds Tim’s attention after he meets her. Certainly her beauty catches his attention first, but it is the refreshingly bewildering view she has of love that really catches him off guard. Although a relatively short story, our hero and heroine are fully-fleshed, and the story itself is gratifyingly full. We learn just enough of Tim’s history to understand why he is so hesitant to allow anyone close to him, without that back story competing with the romance, which is the primary story. Once I finished Fairies & Wishes, I went to look for more of Karen Erickson’s work. If her other stories are as entertaining as this one, she will soon be on my auto-buy list!
