Freak City picks up a few years after the end of Of Man and Monsters. To recap previous books… Para and meta humans have pretty much taken over the city and you can find all manner of the strange and unusual in Tacoma. Young vampire, Cory, is still missing and possibly destroyed. Athena, Loki, and company are still trying to overcome the loss of their leader Deryk Shea, and still trying to find ways to protect this earth from the enemy who has followed them from their previous home planet. For more details, check out Loki’s Sin and Of Man and Monster.

Now for the current story… Ben Dalmas, young lycanthrope, has just come to town and is about to find things are very different from when he left. Amanda Keening, a key operative for the Paranormal Affairs Commission, takes Ben in temporarily, until he can start at the Thorne Academy, the best of the best school for parahumans to attend. Surprised to find there seems to be something special between them, Ben and Amanda try to explore this relationship but things keep getting in the way.

Amanda’s estranged grandfather is trying to get back in her good graces for some unknown reason. Young Jaz Tashae, one of the most promising new students at the Academy keeps pushing the limits to see what she can do with her powers. Of course who can forget the fact tensions are mounting as Hades still has plans in opposition to the rest of the immortals, and the mysterious Raven, threat to all vampires, keeps popping up all over the place. And yes, there is still more going on.

Saje Williams has written yet another compelling and complex story in Freak City. The world-building is vast and brilliantly done and the variety of characters is immense. There are multiple adventures all unfolding at once, which twist and turn around each other to provide a very vivid fantasy. The only drawback to such intense development is that sometimes there is a touch too much going on and it can get very confusing what’s happening if you’re not paying close attention. I actually had to read the book twice to fully grasp what was happening and I’m not entirely sure I still quite got it all.

I love the whole concept of Infinity: Earth… how every single decision, and every different possible version of that decision, made spawns a new parallel Earth. This is a fascinating idea and works well because who hasn’t wondered at least once what would have happened if they’d made a different choice? The possibilities are endless, or more appropriately, infinite. This theory alone will get the mind reeling as to all sorts of prospects. There really is nothing impossible in the world(s) Saje Williams develops.

In Freak City we will find answers to some questions we had at the conclusion to Of Man and Monsters but as with any good series storyteller, new questions are unveiled that are bound to carry over for resolution in future stories. We find out what has happened to some of our heroes (or villains) from the previous books and we are introduced to new people who are bound to play a large role in future developments of the Infinity: Earth world. The ultimate battle is still yet to come and it’s pretty apparent we can expect to be blown away when that happens.
