Shadow has long loved her dearest friend Lon. Unfortunately, he is a widowed father as a result of an attack by Shadow’s own kind, the fairies, and his late wife’s family blames Shadow for their misfortune. Five years later, the fairies attack once more and Lon is the one who is harmed. Will the Love in Shadow he finds be enough to save him? Love in Shadow is a pleasing story about second chances. Shadow turned her back on her own kind due to their role in killing Lon’s wife and Shadow’s own guilt at not being able to stop them. This was a huge sacrifice to make, yet Lon’s family scorns her and is unwilling to acknowledge how much she has done for them in the times since. Over the years, Shadow has grown very close to Lon and his children but feels he can never return that love because of what she is. When a second attack occurs, Shadow feels even more responsible, believing she should have seen it coming and been able to stop it. Now she is lost, convinced the only way to protect Lon is to leave him. Watching these two dance around their feelings for each other is bittersweet, yet leaves us with the satisfaction of knowing love can overcome anything. © Kelley A. Hartsell, March 2009.
