After fifteen years as Chicago’s gossip columnist for the Daily Mail Today and at the top of her game, Rebecca Covington had certainly paid her dues, which was why a demotion from the new owner of the paper had her reeling.  Not only that, but Rebecca was expected to write recipes in the Home and Food section – she who could not boil water and whose oven had not worked in the last four years.   Well darlings, Rebecca was not going down without a fight no matter how incredibly disarming her new boss, David Sumner (a Pierce Brosnan look alike) makes her feel.  She’d show him that young fresh new blood couldn’t surpass tried and true brilliance when reinventing oneself!

*** Every so often I tend to rally myself out of my beloved historical romances to see what the contemporary writers are all about and I must say that this novel ensnared me from its delightful beginning to end.  What I found fascinating was it was not completely centered around the twenty-somethings but had more ‘mature’ leads which I found utterly refreshing.   Rebecca was a feisty professional who was given a near fatal blow to her career and instead of quitting and running with her tail between her legs, she was determined to grab hold of what was offered and  show the new owner what creativity was all about.

Now the real genius was not only the fact that she couldn’t cook, but she had to give the recipes a new twist!  With the aid of her best friend Harry she embellished the recipes (which by the way sound yummy) with her own trademark bravado of spice!  My, my but these recipes were a hit and certainly got the attention of the new boss man, who was having a hard time holding onto some unrealistic vows he’d made to himself. Rebecca the former gossip maven had turned into a very tempestuous hot dish!  What was really wonderful was this author proving that age is just a number and has nothing to do with romance and passion.  Brava!

Bottom line:  This was a very fast and absolutely fun read with secondary characters galore whether friend or foe, that kept the action going lickity-split with both laughter and a few tears making for a dynamite romantic comedy read.
