At one time, Georgie York was the costar on one of America’s favorite television sitcoms. Lately she’s finding it hard holding up her head and flashing that it doesn’t bother me smile and spunky attitude for the paparazzi. Could the reasons possibly be that her very famous husband has publicly abandoned her for another woman; her last few films have tanked; and her father is continually driving her nuts? Running off to Las Vegas for a ‘girls just wanna have fun’ weekend who should show up to throw a wet blanket over her, but her despicable ex-costar Bramwell Shepard! Bram - the beast - whose unprofessional and scandalous behavior had caused the producers to cancel their award winning sitcom series. Bad enough her girlfriends didn’t show up but things went from bad to worse the next day, when suffering from the worst hangover ever, Georgie woke up discovering she had a fake marriage, a ‘fake’ husband, and possibly (maybe?) a fake sex life. *** This was just so good! So many times I found myself sitting longer in the car (burning expensive gas) just to hear more of this fabulous story. There are a lot of reviews out there that that give this story a hard-rap quoting it’s a Jen/Brad/Angelina triangle makeover. I really didn’t see this or was given that impression while listening to this story. Possibly because whether or not it was, there were so many other delicious elements and supporting characters in that even if it were – who cares! The story was a fabulous fun and fascinating look behind the scenes of the glitter, glamour, and pitfalls of being a Hollywood star. Susan Elizabeth Phillips (SEP) created some of the most captivating characters, and revisited some I met from NATURAL BORN CHARMERS, but oh my, did she ever give them depth! Georgie and Bram were complicated each harboring years of angst as child actors growing up and surviving Hollywood, each in their own way, so their development and growth was terrific. Their dialogs with hidden meanings, distrust of one another, and eventual awakening to their mutual admiration and love was both humorous and poignant. From Bram’s confrontational and wacky housekeeper Chazz; Georgie’s personal assistant; her controlling father; and her agent – all these and more were fashioned beautifully by SEP, but it was the performance of voices by Julia Gibson’s reading that brought them fully to life! What more can be said except that anyone embarking on a long drive will love the contemporary warm and wonderful world that SEP has created with WHAT I DID FOR LOVE. Secondly, no one will not find better traveling companions than the people brought to life in this marvelous contemporary romantic comedy. Reviewed by Marilyn Rondeau for CK2S Kwips and Kritiques |
