“Once you get a taste for thievery, you never lose it.” No matter how much money young respectable Miss Jessamyn (Jess) Whitby made legitimately, she never lost the thrill that came from picking someone’s pocket, or planning a perfect burglary.  Respectability had its place but it would never compare to the rush she was now experiencing.  Only this was more than just another scheme to her, this was about finding proof to save her father’s life.  Accused of treason Jess had to find the real traitor, the infamous mole “Cinq” who she thinks is Sebastian Kennett.

Captain Sebastian Kennett, wealthy bastard son of an English nobleman, was the man who accused her father, only Jess had reason to believe Sebastian set her father up.  Clever as she is Jess has met her match in Sebastian, a dangerous man whose lingering touch sparks their mutual physical attraction and is igniting Jess’ long held passions.

*** This was definitely a non-stop read with an absolutely marvelous heroine. There were layers upon layers built into creating Jess.  Abandoned by her father at the age of 8, she fell in with the underworld, and became known as “Jess the Hand”.  The eyes, ears and runner to the vicious London underworld crime boss Lazarus who taught her everything he knew of picking pockets and thievery.  Rescued by her father, a smuggler by trade, she traveled throughout the continent, trading goods as well as smuggling and amassing a fortune.  Few people realized that Jess was the financial brains running the business.  Smart and sassy, beautiful and honorable, she would never let her father, or a friend go down without a fight.

Jess’ relationship with Sebastian was complex.  Bastard son of a Lord, Sebastian was dangerous yet held a place of respect among his peers.  After losing a ship with several friends and an entire crew dead, he had every reason to want to see Jess’ father pay for his treasonous acts.  He never expected to have such an insane attraction to the daughter of his enemy, even though he thought it entirely possible she was part of the spy network selling secrets to the French.  The author kept the steam sizzling as their attraction to one another was kicked up in the sensual department each time they were brought together.  Jess’s verbal repartees to Sebastian’s threats and insinuations were at times hilarious with dialogs that were at times laugh out loud funny and bringing you into the moment.

This latest espionage tale (following THE SPYMASTER’S LADY) gives the reader all they could possibly imagine and more.  Does it stand alone? – Absolutely!  But, after my first introduction to this author in MY LORD AND SPYMASTER you can rest assured I’ll be backtracking to find the first in Bourne’s Spymaster Series.   Abounding with fabulous characters, exciting scenario’s, and a deeply sensual romance, this is one book I highly suggest you put on your read list.  It has one of the more interesting and lively heroines I’ve read all summer!   Bravo!
