Holly Donovan has nowhere else to go; that is why she showed up on her former classmate’s doorstep asking for a job, not really expecting Becky to help after the way Holly treated her in school. She is surprised by the offer of a job, and totally unprepared for the additional offer of a place to stay. The fact that the room Becky puts her in is right next door to Becky’s hunky cousin, who just happened to be the man Holly had a major crush on in school, catches Holly completely off-guard. Off-guard is exactly where Warren Feldman wants the beautiful Holly. And he has ample opportunity to accomplish just that when his cousin Becky hires her as his assistant. From the moment he sees her, he knows she is the woman for him, but convincing the commitment phobic Holly of that is a seemingly impossible task, even for someone with Warren’s special abilities. His telekinetic powers may help him seduce his skittish assistant, but will they help him win her heart? More importantly, will they help him protect her when danger seems to threaten her life at every turn? I absolutely loved the premise for Mind Games Book 1: Mine Over Matter. I also loved the characters, the plot, the setting, and the steamy scenes as well. Where this book let me down was all technical. This is the first story I have yet read by Kai Andersen, and I am totally impressed with her vivid imagination and her flair with turning a phrase. Because of this, I will be looking at her work again in the future. That said, I felt as if the romance between Warren and Holly moved too fast without enough impetus to support the rapidly paced affair. Also, at times the dialogue just didn’t feel natural to me. It felt like it was trying to move the story, rather than feeling like a conversation between the characters. Great dialogue should advance the story while deluding the reader into believing we are eavesdropping on the characters rather than reading dialogue. There were also times during which I felt both Warren and Holly fell out of character a bit, which was disconcerting. Even with all of that, I really did enjoy the story. I liked each of the characters immensely, both the lead and supporting characters, and appreciated Andersen’s ability to make them real from the first page. I actually cared about these people, which is probably the main reason it worried me when I thought they did something out of character for themselves. The author wove an intricate mystery throughout the story that had me on the edge of my seat. She dropped enough clues for me to be able to figure out a few of the twists, yet still managed to surprise me a few times. Best of all, she left enough of the mystery unsolved to create a titillating cliff-hanger guaranteed to make the reader hungry for the sequel, without leaving this story feeling ‘unfinished’. There is no doubt in my mind that Kai Andersen is a talented writer, and I know the few negatives I have concerning this story can be cleaned up with a good editor and a few revisions. Should that ever happen with Mine Over Matter, I’ll be the first in line to re-read the story. And I will be looking forward to the next book in the series as well.
