It’s been 18 years since Brophy made the ultimate sacrifice in the Nightmare Battle. He has remained asleep, holding the black emmeria at bay while those who love him have sought for a way to save him. Who will awake him as Shara, Ossamyr, and the Awakened Child, Arefaine Morgeon, all struggle to find the solution? But is Brophy truly free of the emmeria? Ossamyr, Shara, and Brophy will follow very different paths… will it lead to their destruction or salvation? If you haven’t read HEIR OF AUTUMN, then most of the events of MISTRESS OF WINTER will seem a bit confusing. The world created by Giles Carwyn and Todd Fahnestock is quite complex and they have a plethora of characters. MISTRESS OF WINTER follows up on the events of HEIR OF AUTUMN and regularly references past histories and associations so without that back history, many of the motivations of the characters may seem somewhat confusing as well. Giles Carwyn and Todd Fahnestock take the reader on some very unexpected paths in MISTRESS OF WINTER. These twists are brilliant but are also tough emotionally. The character development ensures that none of the characters are one dimensional as they continue to grow as the story progresses. However, this also means that the characters sometimes make the sort of choices that leave the reader wanting to scream wildly at them to just stop and think for a minute! MISTRESS OF WINTER is the second part of what is shaping up to be a very interesting series. The storyline is definitely for a mature audience as the sexual overtones are still present. However, it is easy to see that the authors are settling into their world and finding their voice. MISTRESS OF WINTER is well worth reading for those who like their fantasy novels a bit on the darker side.Reviewed by Debbie |
