Atticus is dying, and accepts his fate, having grown weary of a near immortal life lived too long alone.  Lying in the wreckage of a deadly crash, the vampire feels the life force of those around him slipping away, until there is only himself and one other.  Atticus is willing to let his life finally pass, until he recognizes that other as someone who had shown him recent kindness.

Realizing she’ll never survive without his assistance, he becomes determined to save her, even if it means prolonging his own desolate life.  But once he has saved her, can he ever let her go?

Bianca D’Arc’s novella, One and Only is the first in her paranormal series, Brotherhood of Blood:  Tales of the Vampire.  In just the one and a half page prologue, the author makes us feel Atticus pain, loneliness, and despair, and then shows us his compassion and nobility before ever reaching chapter one.  When we meet Lissa, we are as captivated by her innocent honesty as Atticus himself is.

Only twenty-four pages long, One and Only effectively sets the stage for a series of sequels, and subtly introduces the readers to the precepts of D’Arc’s vampire world, while keeping us focused on the romance in the story.  Indeed, the information flows naturally in the story, providing the background needed to understand Atticus’ motivations and actions, while keeping us spellbound.
