Orphaned as a child, Dr. Rene Selkis was provided for by a wealthy and mysterious benefactor who she never really knew, in spite of his generosity with her. When she receives word that he has died, and his will demands she must travel to Egypt to care for his remains, she is surprised, but goes nevertheless. While traveling to Egypt, her dreams of a fantasy lover increase in frequency and intensity, unnerving her. She is even less prepared to meet her fantasy lover in the flesh as soon as she arrives at her host’s home. Ralabos knows the beautiful doctor is his soul mate reincarnated, else he would not have awakened from his magical slumber once she stepped foot in Egypt. Convincing her, however, proves more than difficult. If he can’t win her trust and her love in time, they will be doomed to relive the same tragedy again – but there will be no chance for Rene to be reborn again this time! With some authors, no blurb can do justice to their work, and Toni L. Meilleur is surely such an author. While I had noticed her books previously and been interested enough to add them to my book wish list, it wasn’t until I actually began to read Ralabos that I realized how riveting this author’s writing truly is! I was spellbound from the first chapter, and did not stop reading this book until its end. Indeed, once I finished this book, I was compelled to launch into another of her books immediately. Shifters: Ralabos introduces us to Meilleur’s own mythos behind the legends of the Egyptian deities, and we find ourselves caught in the cross fires between good and evil, with not just Rene’s life in the balance, but the future of mankind. While the story is more than satisfying as an erotic romance, the author delivers a well-rounded tale complete with a dastardly antagonist bent on destroying Ralabos and his love, and subsequently enslaving the human race. Ralabos is the only one strong enough to defeat him, but if he loses Rene again, he will have no will to survive. Ralabos is as intense a leading man as you will find. His love for Rene is never in question – indeed it burns so strongly it frightens her, although she is drawn to him, nonetheless. Knowing this, Ralabos treats her with consideration, allowing her as much time as the situation allows for her to build her trust and realize her love for him. I see opportunity in Ralabos for a prequel, should Meilleur find herself inspired. I know I would be very interested in the full telling of the events that transpired eons ago that led Ralabos and Rene to this time and place. While the author does a wonderful job of telling enough of their history for this story to make sense, she leaves the appetite whetted for more. Luckily, she has plenty of other books to keep me busy until that happens! Reviewed by Jennifer
