In the fifth installment of Julie Kenner’s Demon Hunting Soccer Mom series, we find Kate Conner in a more complicated situation than ever. Her teenage daughter is determined to flush out her Hunter roots and wants to train instead of study algebra. Her toddler son is ever so… toddler-like. Her current husband wants to help her hunt, but as a lawyer, is somewhat limited by his abilities, but it doesn’t keep him from trying! Her first husband has come back from the dead, and is being taken over by a demon. And his demon has a lover who will do anything to bring them together again.

Kate Connor, the demon smiting soccer mom is one of my favorite characters. If Buffy grew up and moved to suburbia, she’d be something like Kate. I adore the relationship between Kate and her children! I can relate enough to laugh at the toddler and teenage antics without losing my sweet escape in the world Julie Kenner so artfully created.

In this novel, Kate is under more duress than ever. Now that she is out of the slaying closet to her husband, daughter, and best friend, you might think her life would get easier, but not even close. The relationship between Kate and her first husband has been a huge complication in the last few books, and it only gets more intense. The author has taken a situation that could get old if dragged out too long, or mis-plotted, and created a nail biting lover’s triangle with delicious intensity.

A bit less action oriented than previous books, the emotional obstacles Kate endures with her two husbands’ bring another focus that make the pages turn just as quickly.

Although this is the fifth in the series, it can stand alone. And then you’d want to go back and read the previous four! These are books that consistently deliver and never disappoint.
