Without warning, news anchorwoman, Alison Reynolds is fired from her job in favor of a “younger face”. Adding insult to injury, she discovers her husband not only had been having an affair, but he knew she was going to be fired! To top everything off, poor Alison is summoned home by the death of her best friend. Back in Arizona with family, Alison has a hard time believing the circumstances surrounding her friend’s death. With her investigative instincts kicking in, Alison begins to look into what really happened to her friend. J.A. Jance hits another one out of the park with this genesis of another series. EDGE OF EVIL provides a good foundation of characters while offering a page turning mystery. Alison Reynolds was likeable from the beginning, with a lot of potential in the future. The relationship with her parents and her son brought a nice sense of realism. What also stood out to me besides the great characterization and solid mystery is the accurate way the author wrote about firearms. There is a responsibility one has when they choose to carry a gun, and the author wrote about the training, proper use and what can happen when you are faced with a life and death situation. While J.P. Beaumont remains my favorite creation by Ms. Jance, there is a lot of potential with Alison Reynolds. With the author’s ability to create a good mystery and interesting social commentary, I’ll definitely be reading more in this series, WEB OF EVIL, HAND OF EVIL and CRUEL INTENT.
