Nick and Sean have been partners for years. Heck, they’ve been more than partners – they’ve been best friends, confidantes, and family. Having seen each other through some of the worst times, they are as close as two men can get – well, almost as close as two men can get. They aren’t lovers, but then, neither man is gay. Still, Nick has started to have thoughts about Sean he’s never experienced for any other man, thoughts he never expected to feel for a man. He knows if Sean ever realizes it, their partnership, and probably their friendship will be damaged, if not totally destroyed. But when their captain asks the two police detectives to go undercover at a gay resort to infiltrate a dangerous drug ring, they have to play the part of a gay couple. How can Nick touch, kiss, and sleep with Sean pretending they are a couple and still hide his true feelings? Sean seems to have no qualms about playing the part, but Nick knows that after the assignment, their lives will never be the same again. The Assignment is the first piece of homoerotic fiction I have read by Evangeline Anderson, although I’ve read most of her other work already. One thing became very clear to me after reading this book: it doesn’t matter what kind of relationship it is, Anderson is very adept with any love story. And make no mistake, that is what this book is – a love story. The author explores the budding relationship between two very alpha males who have never before had homosexual inclinations, and yet are irresistibly drawn together by their close bond and abiding love. While we often have omniscience to both characters’ thoughts in Anderson’s other tales, she cleverly presents us with only Nick’s thoughts and feelings in The Assignment, and we are left to wonder along with Nick at Sean’s actions and feelings. The plotline was ingenious for propelling the romance between the two men. As detectives on a police force, the partners may have otherwise denied the extent of their feelings for each other and contented themselves with a deep friendship. Forcing them into a situation where they must play the part of a romantic couple allowed them to acknowledge their love not only to themselves, but each other. Lovers of M/M love stories will be delighted with Evangeline Anderson’s The Assignment. Readers who aren’t certain whether they want to delve into homoerotic fiction should be warned that the story does contain explicit love scenes between men (something that will be a selling point for many!) And if you love The Assignment, you’ll be very pleased to know Anderson has published a follow-up story titled I’ll Be Hot For Christmas revisiting Nick & Sean’s story! Reviewed by Jennifer
