It’s been quite some time since this reviewer wandered off the romantic fiction path and picked up something outside of the genre. But, THE BOOK OF FATE intrigued me, so I hunkered down, the knot in my stomach growing as I worried whether I’d made a huge mistake in choosing the huge 500-page thriller. Until I read the first page, and was absolutely, one hundred percent hooked.

THE BOOK OF FATE tells the story of Wes Holloway, a once-cocky, ambitious presidential aide whose life is changed forever when he puts the president’s oldest friend, Ron Boyle, into the presidential limousine and the man winds up the victim of a crazy assassin.

Eight years later, Wes has barely learned to live with the scars—both physical and emotional—as he continues to serve the now former president and first lady. Suddenly, that horrible day he’s tried so hard to forget comes back to haunt him when he spots Ron Boyle, alive and well, in Malaysia.

With the chance to finally undo the worst day of his life, Wes plunges into the intrigue, trying to figure out what really happened that day. He is drawn into a decade-old presidential crossword, the mysterious history of the Masonics and a two-hundred-year-old code invented by Thomas Jefferson. Can he uncover the Book of Fate’s secrets before he is silenced?

Brad Meltzer has written an engrossing story filled with twists, turns, danger, intrigue and surprises. In short, this book has it all. From the well-written, three-dimensional Wes to the rest of supporting characters, readers are drawn into a carefully plotted web of deception that starts on page one and is not fully revealed until the final page.

Brad Meltzer’s attention to detail is astounding, as no thread is left dangling, no angle left unexplored. Think you have what it takes to uncover the truth? Think again. THE BOOK OF FATE is one well-crafted tale.

Yet, beyond the plot, you have so much more. Wes’ emotional journey, which mirrors his race for answers, raises this book to a new level as readers get the satisfaction of watching Wes learn valuable and fulfilling life lessons. Wes is a character that comes to life through the pages of this book, with surprising depth and sensitivity.

THE BOOK OF FATE is a must read. Period. Don’t miss this one.
