Jenny Harris never expected to find herself alone when she was days away from giving birth to her first child. But that’s what happens when her live in fiancé, Dean, goes out for cigarettes one night and just doesn’t come back. The next day Jenny goes into labor. Plunged into single motherhood, Jenny doesn’t have much time to dwell on her broken heart. In fact, she doesn’t have much time—period. Her baby daughter, Maxie, consumes every waking, as well as sleeping, moment and while Jenny wouldn’t trade those sleepless nights for anything, there are times when she wonders if she’ll ever find happiness. With a little patience, and a lot of trial and error, Jenny will eventually come to realize that there really is a bright side of disaster. When I first picked up this book, I wasn’t sure what to expect. To be honest, it didn’t seem like my kind of book. It was written in first person (which I tend to avoid) and it seemed like just the kind of quirky novel I’d normally frown upon. Yet, something magical happened when I read the first page. I was drawn into the world of Jenny Harris. I laughed with her. I cried with her. I shared her struggles, and commiserated with her on both the joys and trials of motherhood. In short, Jenny Harris won me over. THE BRIGHT SIDE OF DISASTER is funny, poignant and smart. Everyone can relate to the bitter taste of disappointment that suddenly turns sweet when we realize that something better has come out of our heartache. Through the crafty pen of Katherine Center, readers accompany Jenny Harris on this journey in witty, endearing detail. If this brilliant debut novel is any indication, Katherine Center will be an author to keep your eye on. THE BRIGHT SIDE OF DISASTER is a book to savor and one that we can all learn from. Highly recommended.
