Fionna Hawkes lives something of a dual life. The proprietor of Every Book and Cranny by day, Fionna spends her nights writing horror novels published under her pseudonym, F.J. Sparrow. Determined to keep this secret, as well as another more painful one, Fionna becomes something of a loner—until she bumps into Aidan McBride one night. Aidan McBride is fighting his own demons, but the mystery of the elusive Fionna Hawkes provides an enticing diversion from his troubles. He won’t rest until Fionna divulges the deepest secrets of her heart. Yet when it becomes clear that someone is stalking Fionna, Aidan must claim her as his own before he loses her forever. Samantha James scores another hit with this interesting tale of intrigue and seduction. I loved the fresh angle of a woman as horror novelist during the Regency period. And once again, Ms. James’ style is chock full of emotion, wit, and sizzling romantic tension. Both Fionna and Aidan are exquisitely drawn characters, full of hopes and fears, and very true to life. I enjoyed Aidan’s banter with his brother Alex, as well as the witty barbs between Aidan and Fionna, which add even more flavor to this sensual story. The stalker sub-plot did come off a bit flat for me, and I felt that in the end it was wrapped up a little too easily. I would have liked to see more danger and intrigue as Fionna and Aidan tried to figure out who her stalker was, as well as a more dramatic conclusion. I also found it hard to believe Fionna’s determination to keep her “other” secret from Aidan. Her shame seemed a bit forced, and it seemed a bit unreal that she would believe Aidan could hold such a thing against her. The romance between Fionna and Aidan is beautifully done, however, and I definitely found myself engrossed in their love story as I turned the pages. At times funny and at times poignant, THE SEDUCTION OF AN UNKNOWN LADY is a fresh, sensual escape guaranteed to capture a reader’s imagination as well as their heart.
