Enter a world where magick is all that protects humans from the diabolic creatures that populate the world on the other side of THE VEIL….

Extranormal Investigations Unit (EIU) Detective Devon Harrigan has been a vampire for over 500 years but he has never seen anything like the Black Hole Killer (BHK).  The BHK literally leaves miniature black holes in the victim (or in what is left of the victim).  These black holes will eventually break down the veil created by High Mage Aedius of the Order of Light after terrorists detonated an anti-matter device that created the rift between the two worlds.  The BHK must be stopped at any cost or all of humanity is at risk.

Lady Helene Du Solaire has been groomed from an early age for the role of Maitri of the Order and is considered the savior of the Order.  In fact, the Order believes that Helene is responsible for the veil remaining in place.  Unfortunately, she is now the target of the BHK and Harrigan has been assigned the duty of keeping her safe.  The Chief of the EIU arranges a safehouse for Harrigan and Helene at the Milani Clan Motherhouse, Harrigan’s own personal house of horrors.  Police protection will not be enough to stop the plans of the BHK and Harrigan is pulled back into the investigation when his partner, werewolf Joseph Calloway, is kidnapped.  Helene and Harrigan must work together to stop the BHK and keep THE VEIL in place.

THE VEIL is a serial novel and as such is marketed in 12 weekly installments culminating with a cliffhanger at the end of the season.  This reviewer did not read the series on a weekly basis, but rather in one spell-binding sitting.  Impressively enough, THE VEIL did not come across as a serial but instead flowed smoothly together with none of the jarring stopping points one usually encounters in novelized serials.

The storyline of THE VEIL is phenomenal and keeps the reader entranced from the first word.  H A Fowler is to be commended for the excellent job of maintaining such a perfect balance of action and intrigue with all of the necessary background information for the story.  In only 90 pages, Ms. Fowler provides the entire history behind the origin of the veil without sacrificing any of the action to do so.  Perhaps the only downside to reading THE VEIL, is that the reader has to wait for the next season rather than reaching the conclusion immediately!  This reviewer is anxiously awaiting Season 2 as Ms. Fowler has cleverly left our heroes in a desperate bind from which it would seem that escape is impossible.

THE VEIL is a fascinating and powerful addition to the dark fantasy genre.  H A Fowler has crafted a credible world populated with vampires, werewolves, mages, and other supernatural creatures.  Readers of the genre will be enthralled by Ms. Fowler’s stunning foray into the paranormal and will not want this series to end any time soon.
