Cadyn Clearwater is half Cerulean. His Cerulean heritage grants him special powers, including that of mental telepathy and wraith, which allows him to create a shield protecting both him and anyone in his near vicinity. Raised by the inventor Shirin Drew, Cadyn has always loved Shirin’s granddaughter, Meena. He believes he must prove himself worthy for her, however, and leaves her to find out more about his culture and to obtain training so he will be able to demonstrate to Meena that he deserves her love. Time has passed and things have changed drastically between Shirin and Meena. Shirin begs Cadyn to return as Meena’s protector. Her previous protector has been killed and she has isolated herself from Shirin despite a threat to her own life. Cadyn immediately agrees, only to find that the open and joyful Meena he once knew is now distant and reserved. Cadyn must first break through the barriers surrounding her heart if he is to protect her from the unknown threat to her life. THROUGH CERULEAN BLUE EYES is written in a deceptively simple style that hooks the reader’s interest almost immediately. The story is told in first person through Cadyn’s perspective. Initially, this is a bit disconcerting as usually first person romances are told from the woman’s point of view. However, as the story progresses, R. Pia’s sheer genius in choosing this approach becomes readily apparent. R. Pia has obviously put a lot of careful deliberation into her world building. The various races and cultures portrayed in THROUGH CERULEAN BLUE EYES are both distinctive and believable. The vivid descriptions of the ceremony involving body paint are particularly sensuous and provide a unique stamp to that specific culture. THROUGH CERULEAN BLUE EYES is the first full length story published by R. Pia. However, it is very easy to forget this as she subtly lures the reader into her world. Despite a few over-the-top descriptions in the sex scenes, the story manages to convey both the angst and excitement of two lovers growing in their affection for one another. Cadyn and Meena are likeable in spite of Meena’s sometimes abrupt withdrawals and Cadyn’s anger each time it happens. In fact, their relationship is all the more realistic because of the challenges they face. THROUGH CERULEAN BLUE EYES is a welcome addition to the genre. It will be interesting to see how R. Pia develops other stories as this book is only book one in a series. THROUGH CERULEAN BLUE EYES is easily recommended!
