Jennifer McKinnon needs a break from her postage-sized Manhattan apartment and her lonely, stale life where music has become her only companion. When she receives a call from her sister, Megan, urging her to come to Artane for a visit, Jennifer takes it as a sign and readily agrees to the spur of the moment vacation. But from the moment she steps foot on Artane soil, she is overcome with a deep, unexplainable wistful despair. Visiting the nearby keep of Wyckham, the profound feeling only grows stronger, until suddenly, Jennifer finds herself in the year 1229, where a group of unsavory characters brand her a witch and decide to burn her at the stake. Though Jennifer had searched far and wide in present day Manhattan for her knight-in-shining-armor, she instead finds him here, in Medieval England, in the form of Nicholas de Piaget who rescues her and brings her to his keep. Nicholas is immediately taken with Jennifer, but he has seen her kind before—the people his brother refers to as “faeries”—and knows it is only a matter of time before she wants to return to her world. There’s only one complication. Fate has other plans… Lynn Kurland has surpassed even her personal best with WHEN I FALL IN LOVE. This is a book that will haunt you long after the final page is turned. Longtime fans of Kurland have eagerly awaited Nicholas de Piaget’s story for quite a while, and this reviewer is thrilled to report that Ms. Kurland has outdone herself. Nicholas is a tortured soul. Though legally adopted by Rhys and Gwen, he is still considered a bastard by English royalty. In earlier Kurland books, readers found out that Nicholas was deeply in love with his sister-by-adoption, Amanda, even though he knew she could never be his. These deep conflicts serve to mold Nicholas into a complex hero who begins to believe that he will never find a woman who will love him and want to share home and family with him. Enter Jennifer Mckinnon from the Ledenham Abbey time gates, and the tale that follows is one that will cause the hearts of readers everywhere to soar. Readers will delight in re-visiting the de Piaget family. Ms. Kurland’s trademark style and colorful cast of characters come to life in the book making WHEN I FALL IN LOVE more than a love story between a man and a woman. WHEN I FALL IN LOVE is also about the love of a family, and the de Piaget’s are certainly quite an extraordinary one at that. Lynn Kurland has a way of putting readers into Medieval England. It is as though we are able to travel through time and enjoy a slice of history. This reviewer felt a part of the de Piaget’s as the story unfolded, each character becoming a cherished friend. As the story ended, I found myself reluctant to leave the characters behind in their world. Luckily, I can revisit them as often as I’d like. WHEN I FALL IN LOVE is beautiful and poignant. It is the kind of book that grabs your emotions and transports you to another time and place. Highly recommended, WHEN I FALL IN LOVE is a gem to be cherished.
